When we see something about to go wrong, we need to think on our feet what the best way to deal with it will be. Rarely is “flying off the handle” helpful. Short of a life-threatening situation, it is worth taking half a second to think, “What is the best action/response” and then move on it. Usually offering to help your child sort it out is the most productive action, he already knows what went wrong and will feel bad about it, but if he feels your support to put it right, he will learn from the process and your relationship is kept intact.
So “Oh oh” can be just long enough for you to gather your thoughts for the best plan of action!
