Have you noticed how people instinctively talk quietly and in loving tones around new babies and how loud we become around children who are older? It is interesting how we slow down to focus on a newborn but can rush around giving older children the briefest of attention. We know from research that our children are very sensitive to tone of voice. So we need to be aware not only of the words we use, but what message our volume and tone are conveying to our children. Teachers are often told, if they want a noisy class to be quiet, whisper the instructions!
