Practical Parenting: R is for

R-is-for-readingReading – is a skill we need for life, and the joy of reading can begin in just the first few months of life!

http-::www.feelgoodhealth.co.za:blog:wp-content:uploads:2012:10:booksResearch has shown that children who are read to from a young age, will have a better vocabulary range and reading skill than their peers who miss out on this very basic skill. In South Africa, this is identified as one of the biggest contributors to our very challenged education system. Long before the skill of reading is mastered by young children entering Grade 0 and Grade 1 , children are introduced to the LOVE of books by seeing stories and books as a way to discover knowledge. To be able to choose the same beloved tale over and over again, dramatizing the familiar rhymes of fairy tales and learning from the story line of good news and disappointments, a child can learn to really appreciate the power of reading.

Use your local library as a resource to build your child’s opportunity of learning and once the skill is mastered, they can enjoy using technology to expand on the basics of reading and writing skills.

Reading together, provides a beautiful way for parents to have close and intimate time together at the end of  the day, emotionally satisfying and comforting for both parent and child to be sharing story time together before bedtime.

About parentcoachsa

Steph has over 30 year's experience working with families to design child care solutions and supporting parents to be the best parents they can be. In addition she has worked with corporates to find work-life balance solutions for their staff. As a practitioner I have become increasingly aware that work-life balance has become a critical issue, particularly in an age in which the demands of work are often at odds with home and family life. I am passionate about family life, it is the catalyst for every other relationship we have - in every other area of life, we expect to study, get a qualification, try something on appro , we want to feel in control - however it is the one area of life, that none of the above applies - Babies do not arrive with a parenting manual! It is my privilege as a Parent and Life Coach, to partner with you as you take hold of the challenges you are facing in your family, in your life and work with you , supporting you to achieve the decisions and outcomes you are choosing for your family and for your life. It is my job, to keep you on track, to cheer you on, when the "going gets tough". Through coaching, understanding of yourself and your child, and his or her phase of development will enable you to consciously develop a parenting style that will benefit you and your family.
